Carpenter ants get their name from chewing through wood to make tunnels and their homes. While carpenter ants may chew through wood, they do not consume it like termites. A carpenter ant infestation will first attack wet, moist, or damaged wood, but will eventually extend their tunnels into dry, undamaged wood.
Carpenter ants will be attracted to the food in your home. They will feed on just about anything that they can access, and worker carpenter ants will travel up to 300 feet away from their colony to scavenge food. This means the colony needing carpenter ant control could be outside your home with workers traveling back and forth.
Preventing Carpenter Ants
Like most insects, carpenter ants are able to squeeze through small cracks and crevices to gain entry into your home. Plant and tree branches too close to your home can provide bridges and entryways into your home as well for a carpenter ant infestation. Ensure your food is sealed and stored properly to deter any ant infestations. Carpenter ants also like making nests in piles of wood, so make sure to store firewood outside and away from the home to ensure complete carpenter ant removal.
