As fall arrives in Ohio, with crisp air and changing leaves, homeowners often notice tiny invaders marching into their homes—pavement ants. These small but persistent pests seek warmth, food, and shelter as temperatures drop, making fall a prime time for infestations. While pavement ants don’t pose significant health risks, their presence can be a nuisance, contaminating food and forming unsightly trails in kitchens or bathrooms. At Prevent Pest Control, we’re dedicated to helping you keep your home pest-free.
Understanding Pavement Ants and Their Fall Behavior
Pavement ants (Tetramorium caespitum) are small, dark brown to black ants, about 1/8 inch long, named for their tendency to nest under sidewalks, driveways, or patios. In Ohio, they’re active year-round but become particularly problematic in fall (September to November) when cooler weather drives them indoors to survive. Pavement ants form colonies with thousands of workers, creating visible trails as they forage for food, often leading to kitchens, pantries, or pet bowls.
Unlike carpenter ants, pavement ants don’t damage structures, but they can contaminate food surfaces and are difficult to eliminate once established. They’re attracted to sugary foods, greasy residues, and crumbs, making homes a buffet during fall when outdoor food sources dwindle. Understanding their habits is the first step to keeping them out, combining identification, prevention, and targeted control measures.
Step 1: Identify Pavement Ants
- Appearance: Pavement ants are tiny (1/8 inch), dark brown or black, with two nodes between their thorax and abdomen. They have parallel grooves on their head and thorax.
- Behavior: They form distinct trails, often along baseboards or countertops. They’re active day and night, seeking sweets, proteins, or grease.
- Nesting Sites: Outdoors, they nest under pavement or stones. Indoors, they may nest in wall voids, under floors, or near heat sources.
- Signs of Infestation: Look for trails in kitchens, bathrooms, or near pet food. Soil or sand piles near cracks indicate nests.
Step 2: Seal Entry Points
- Check for cracks, gaps, and openings around windows, doors, and utility pipes.
- Use silicone caulk to seal cracks. Install weatherstripping and repair screens.
- Clear debris and seal driveway or patio cracks.
- Seal dryer vents, HVAC openings, and plumbing entries with mesh or caulk.
Step 3: Eliminate Food Attractants
- Wipe countertops, sinks, and appliances daily. Sweep or vacuum floors.
- Store food in airtight containers. Seal and clean pet food bowls.
- Use lidded trash cans. Rinse recyclables and store bins away from entry points.
- Clean spills and crumbs promptly, especially sweets or grease.
Step 4: Disrupt Ant Trails
- Wipe trails with a vinegar-water solution or soapy water to remove pheromones.
- Use diatomaceous earth or cinnamon at entry points.
- Follow trails to find entry points or nests and seal them.
- Avoid over-the-counter sprays initially to prevent scattering colonies.
Step 5: Use Baits Strategically
- Use gel or liquid baits with boric acid or fipronil, labeled for pavement ants.
- Place baits along trails and high-activity areas, out of reach of children and pets.
- Allow 1–2 weeks for bait to affect the colony. Don’t clean nearby trails.
- Monitor and replace baits. Seek professional help if activity persists.
Step 6: Maintain Outdoor Defenses
- Remove rocks, bricks, or debris near foundations.
- Use ant granules or sprays around your home’s perimeter as labeled.
- Keep mulch, soil, or plants away from the foundation. Use gravel borders.
- Check for new soil mounds or trails, especially after rain.
Step 7: Seek Professional Ant Control
- Contact Prevent Pest Control if trails persist despite DIY measures.
- If nests are suspected in walls or floors.
- If you want preventive treatments for fall and winter protection.
