Types of Wasps

There are four different types of wasps that you should keep in mind when it comes to pest control prevention. Each wasp makes a different type of nest that you should look out for when inspecting your home in the warm spring and summer months.

Yellowjackets

Yellowjackets may build a hanging nest off the ground, either on trees or on ledges of buildings. These nests typically only have one point of entry as well as a thick protective layer. Yellowjackets tend to seek out old logs or any empty hollow structure as well to build their nests.

Hornets

Hornets nests are often found at least 6 feet off the ground in tree cavities or other raised empty spaces. These nests are made from saliva and wood pulp they chew, and consist of an outer protective layer with tiers on the inside.

Paper Wasps

Paper Wasp nests are typically found under roofs, in tree branches, attics, garages, and overhangs of sheds. These nests are made of open cells, which look like an open umbrella, and have no protective layer. Paper wasps gather fibers from dead wood and plant stems, which they mix with saliva, to build their nests.

Mud Dauber

Mud Daubers mold their nests out of mud made from their own saliva and soil. These nests typically appear as a hole in the ground or on the side of a building. Mud dauber’s only build nests for themselves, and typically do not sting.

Avoid Attracting Wasps To Your Home

Wasps are attracted to foods that are sweet, such as pop, fruit juice, and fallen fruits under fruit trees, to name a few. To prevent wasps at your outdoor gatherings, make sure to clean up quickly after your meal and not leave food out for too long. Use An Oil Blend

Wasp Traps

Wasp traps can be easily found in stores or online, as well as made at home. Place wasp traps near your porch or trees where you notice wasps flying around. A mixture of water and dish soap in a spray bottle can also be used to spray wasp nests if you do not have immediate access to the store.

Close Gaps

Take a walk around your house to check for any cracks and crevices that wasps may be able to sneak into, and seal them. In addition, tidy up any debris that you see around your home that wasps may build a nest in, including old logs and dead tree branches.
